Information and artefacts, which would be useful:
I would be grateful if you have any interesting artefacts, photographs or books related to any of the above that we might borrow, or if you have any personal experiences or expertise in these areas, you might like to share with the class. Any internet research will be more meaningful to your child if it is restricted to pictures or materials specifically prepared for children.

Suggested ways in which you can support Literacy and Numeracy:
It would be really helpful if you could regularly practise mental addition/subtraction, 2,3,4,5 times table for Year 3 and for Year 4 please in addition the 6 and 8 times tables. Please help your child by testing and reciting the tables in a fun way.

Each child needs to bring their reading book every day to read during registration.

Your child might like to make a simple comment, relating to likes/dislikes in their reading record. Asking questions such as “why did he do that?” or “what do you think happens next?” would help children in understanding text and aid comprehension work.

Other information:

P.E. is on a Thursday – all children need to bring their P.E. kit to change into for every lesson. Please make sure that the children bring a P.E. kit for lessons in the hall and for outside as we will try and get outside as much as possible in the fine weather!

Homework will generally cover activities from Literacy and Numeracy lessons, however there may be pieces of homework relating to our theme.

Dan-yr-Ogof School trip

This will be on the 5th of July and I am really looking forward to it. They have requested that any rubbish left over from school packed lunches must be taken back to the school or home.

Educational Trip!!!

Hello just a quick msg to say that class 5 will be visiting a synagogue on Monday and the homework, on this topic, that was handed in was excellent. Hopefully this will allow the children to ask some questions and find some of the artefacts that they had found through their research.

News for class 5

Hello all i would like to say that the year 4's from my class really enjoyed the jamboree on Tuesday and their singing this week was absolutely fabulous. Thanks must go to Mrs Jones who took them!!!

We are getting ourselves ready for this year's Eisteddfod competition which includes Handwriting, Singing, Art, and a Poetry reading. Please try to encourage them to read the poem at home. Many thanks Mr Dowd.

Our topic work this term will be Our World. Some of the literacy activities will develop different styles of writing. Creative skills may be on making a block print, toy/doll out of recycled materials. Our topics for Science are skeletons and habitats.

We would be grateful if you have any interesting artefacts, photographs or books related to any of the above that we might borrow, or if you have any personal experiences or expertise in these areas, you might like to share with the class. Any internet research will be more meaningful to your child if it is restricted to pictures or materials specifically prepared for children.

Suggested ways in which you can support Literacy and Numeracy:
Please continue to practise mental addition/subtraction, 2,3,4,5 times tables for Year 3 and for Year 4 in addition the 6,7,8,9 tables. They need to be asked in a mixed order such as 3x4 and then 7x4 giving the answer, the quicker the better!

For Year 3 children we will be focusing on addition/subtraction, ordering, recognising multiples of different numbers, multiplication and division (grouping), word problems involving money, time, capacity, and number. We will look at simple fractions (quarters) lines of symmetry and right angles.

For Year 4 we will be focusing on reading and writing numbers up to 10 000 in figures and words, develop written methods for addition/subtraction, read scales accurately, word problems involving capacity and time, reflective symmetry, reading angles and turns, recognise and extend numbers sequences, solve mathematical problems, find remainders after division, rounding numbers up/down, multiply/divide different numbers, and begin to recognise the equivalence between decimals and fractions.

I would like to see the class acting out a script from Horrid Henry as they seem excited about the prospect! Each child should bring their reading book every day to read during registration. Your child might like to make a simple comment, relating to likes/dislikes in their reading record. Asking questions such as “why did he do that?” or “what do you think happens next?” would help children in understanding text and aid comprehension work.

P.E. is now a Tuesday until Easter!

From Tuesday 2nd February 2010 until Easter, P.E. will now be on a Tuesday afternoon. This is so that they can take part in football activities in their respective year groups. All year 4 for one hour and all the year 3's for one hour. Please ensure that they remember to bring their P.E. kit because if they don't have it, they cannot take part. Many thanks Mr Dowd.

For Year 3 children we will be focusing mainly on numbers to 1,000, learning to count on/back, investigating patterns, time, make and describe shapes and solve problems using bar charts and Venn diagrams.

For Year 4 we will be focusing mainly on numbers to 10,000, number sequences, simple fractions, time, horizontal lines, co-ordinates, measuring angles, compass points, symmetry, bar charts using scales, Venn and Carroll diagrams. We will also revisit addition/subtraction and multiplication.

Your child will be given spellings from their own work to learn. We encourage the use of “look, cover, write, check” when learning spelling patterns. Each child should bring their reading book every day to read during registration. Your child might like to make a simple comment, relating to likes/dislikes in their reading record.
